Established in 1964, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is a national industry association that represents Canada’s private home, car, and business insurers. IBC works on behalf of its member companies and their customers to lobby for public policies that create and maintain a healthy marketplace – particularly insurance industry regulation that harmonizes jurisdictional rules and helps reduce consumer costs. The Association also seeks communication and consensus among members and other stakeholders, and acts to address common insurance concerns.
IBC membership is open to home, car, and business insurance companies as well as insurance associates (such as insurance brokers). Most Canadian home, car, and business insurers are members of the IBC, which represents roughly 95 per cent of the property and casualty insurance market in Canada – an industry that employs over 104,000 Canadians.
The Association’s mandate is to help member companies resolve issues that are vital to the industry such as forecasting and responding to issues that may arise and anticipating opportunities to identify and influence change to help members better serve the community.
The Association not only helps industry members, but also actively works with the public. IBC is constantly leading initiatives addressing auto theft, injury prevention, road safety, climate change, disaster preparedness and other issues of importance to Canadians.
