Diving into water conservation

ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS:

Do your part to ensure our fresh water supply remains sustainable. Homeowners can make home improvements that will reduce their household's water consumption and help not only their bills, but the environment as well.

Canadians live in close proximity to 20 per cent of the world's fresh water supply, and like many other natural resources, we need to manage our use so the supply remains sustainable. Consider the following tips from The Home Depot Canada to reduce your home's water usage and cut energy bills.

  • Toilets account for some 30 to 40 per cent of residential water consumption, so consider installing a low-flow toilet that can save you seven to 14 litres per flush.
  • A low-flow showerhead can help conserve water without sacrificing pressure, as it uses less than 10 litres per minute compared to 15-30 litres with older showerheads.
  • Use your taps sparingly (such as when brushing your teeth) to avoid wasting water.
  • Mounting an aerator directly onto an older faucet is an easy and inexpensive way to decrease water flow by 25 to 50 per cent.
  • To green up your laundry room, try the following ideas: wait to run the wash until you have a full load; use only cold water; and run the washing machine outside of peak hours.
  • When purchasing a new washing machine, consider an ENERGY STAR certified front load appliance, which uses 40 per cent less water than a top loading model and will keep your clothes clean and fresh.
  • Make your home water conservation upgrades easier on the wallet by checking homedepot.ca/ecooptions for a list of municipal installation rebates offered in each province.
