Ontario couple creates straw bale solar dream home beyond the ordinary.
Lot’s of people talk about how they’d love to build an energy-efficient, solar-powered home in the country some day, but few ever get beyond armchair day dreams. Fewer still manage to actually complete the project with style, elegance and the kind of attention to quality required for real-world success. Glen Hunter and Joanne Sokolowski have achieved all this and more, and that’s why their unique story has so much to offer anyone looking to build beyond the ordinary.
When Hunter and Sokolowski traded the bustle of their Toronto lifestyle for a homeplace in the country, they were determined to do things right. And that meant building a durable, energy efficient straw bale home using expert input and leading-edge technologies.
By the time they broke ground on their 100-acre rural property near Peterborough, Ontario, they knew they were committed to something worth documenting. “I’d always had it in my head to live in a home that was off-grid, energy efficient and as 'healthy' as possible,” explains Hunter. “I'm also interested in modern architecture. It’s a shame that so many people can't get past Victorian, mock-Tudor or suburban bungalows when it comes time to build their own home.”
