Storage Space and All that Stuff

ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS:

Cheryll Gillespie, casaGURU's home design guru, suggests homeowners build custom-designed storage facilities when building a new home.

It's moving day and you find yourself wondering how all the boxes filled with all that "stuff" are going to fit into your new home.

That "stuff" includes:

  • Seasonal decorations
  • Fancy dishes
  • Large serving platters you bring out once a year
  • Family photo albums
  • Your husband's old sports trophies
  • The kids' baby toys
  • And more...

Why don't you have enough room?

When you're planning your home there is so much to think about, from finishing specifications and room sizes to R-values and electrical outlets. So it's easy to understand why we forget about items crammed into the linen closets, garages, basements and attics of the homes we're leaving.

Building a new home provides you with an opportunity to custom-design storage facilities. This includes:

  • Fire and waterproof storage for irreplaceable photos, videos and mementos.
  • Moth proof storage for treasured old and out-of-season clothing.
  • Perfectly sized shelving for file boxes.
  • Bike storage areas and even a specialty rack for the wind surfer.

If you've discussed storage needs with your builder during the design process, you're likely to find space above the garage, under a stairwell or in a mechanical room.

Attic Storage

Unfortunately, attic storage space isn't an option in most modern homes, which have a steep roof pitch.

If you want to use the attic for storage:

  • Discuss this with your builder before the framing of your new house.
  • It will be necessary to change the truss design, plus supply access to the attic with an additional staircase, to accommodate your storage request.
  • The builder might also recommend additional wind-powered vents for the roof to ensure proper air circulation that will protect stored items.
