Are all doorknobs the same?
Hopefully you are not yet overwhelmed by all the decisions you need to make with respect to your new home- paint, flooring, cabinetry, lighting fixtures, counter tops, appliances and door hardware. Yes, that’s correct, you need to choose your door handles. However, aren’t all doorknobs the same?
Your builder may or not offer you a choice with respect to different door hardware, hinges, doorknobs and lock sets. Nevertheless, you should recognize that you might have options when it comes to opening and closing this door. Hardware varies greatly in quality, price and style.
Quality hardware will last forever. Remember the old crystal knobs from your grandparent's house? I never did figure out what happened to all the old keys but the knobs worked great, when they did jiggle loose, my Dad would always get out the screwdriver and tighten them up and then they would be good for another few years. They are probably still functioning perfectly well today even though the old house has long been sold. I hope the new owner didn’t replace the old door knobs.
Styles range from sleek stainless sets to hand forged wrought iron/steel to magnetic entry systems that employ only a key or thumb print pad and no handle or knob whatsoever.
While imported hardware is often well suited to a tight budget, you may find that the sets don’t function well after the warranty expires.
