When we need our teeth fixed, we go to the dentist, and when we need a haircut, we go to the salon. But why do we avoid going to the professionals when it comes to issues of home design and décor? For some reason we are convinced that going it alone is not only cheaper but better, but is it really? If you factor in all the benefits of using a home expert, it is pretty easy to see their value. However, it can be a little confusing to know which expert to use and when. Here is my guide to understanding what the various types of home design and décor professionals do and how to select the right one for your needs.
If your goal is a beautifully decorated home, one option is to hire an interior decorator. These experts can help you select paint colors, fabrics, furnishings, and accessories.
There is no regulatory body overseeing interior decorators, although there are several education programs offering training. One way to locate an interior decorator is through word of mouth; another is to contact a decorator whose work you’ve seen and admired in magazines or on television. Don’t be afraid to ask for references from former clients.
Most interior decorators have arranged discounts with retailers; they may or may not pass these down to you depending on the agreement you’ve made. Most charge an hourly fee but can give you an estimate of the amount of time the project will require.
To find a qualified interior decorator in your area, visit the Canadian Decorators' Association website.
